Quilty Pleasures & Giveaways!

Sew exciting!!  Quiltmaker magazine is hosting a GIVEAWAY in honor of my little quilt on the cover of their May/June '14 issue.

Had a nice online chat with Diane Harris, Quiltmaker's Interactive Editor, who had a few questions about my quilting journey.  Poor thing, she may have gotten more than she bargained for!  I appreciated the opportunity to write it all down, though, and had some fun and shed some tears as I thought of what quilting means to me and my family.  You can see Part I at "Quilty Pleasures HERE, and Part II HERE.

(I first met Diane at this EVENT at AccuQuilt's headquarters)

At any rate, it has been a marvelous month of March (National Quilting Day Week Month!!) - full of quilty delights and surprises. Inside I'm still jumping for joy!

Now, about that giveaway.  The package includes a 10" Hexie-Half ruler and a couple of piles of fat quarters from Riley Blake Designs, and the Quiltmaker May/June '14 magazine.  Hop over to Quilty Pleasures and leave a comment to be included in this great giveaway.

PLUS, I'll have a small giveaway here as well!  The package will include Quiltmaker magazine, a 5" Hexie-Half ruler, a small stack of RBD Fat Quarters, along with some other fun Spring/Easter tidbits and goodies! Leave a comment here for a chance at that giveaway too!  Did you celebrate National Quilting Day?  What (or who) got you started on your quilting journey?

Both contests will close Friday, April 4th at midnight.  Winners will be announced next week.

  2. I learned to quilt in my mid-twenties at a local quilt store. I had always wanted to learn, but there were no quilters in my family to teach me.

  3. I started quilting when our family was stationed overseas. I took a class at the community center and was hooked. Jenny is the name of my first quilt teacher. That was over 15 years ago. I'm still just a newbie in the skill area though.

  12. Not until after my grandmother; who did everything passed away did I have an opportunity to learn quilting. I was at a garage sale and picked up a bag of purple 3x3 squares of fabric, bought them took them home and started sewing. I had always wanted to make quilts, had tried a time or two but just wasted fabric because I had no directions and no way to get them. Well that was two and a half years ago and I've now finished 29 quilts and have 6 more to finish. I'm so thankful for having a computer to assist me in my addiction, I would not be sewing quilts if not for the wonderful help I have found online.

  13. Other than doing some quilting, I didn't celebrate National Quilting Day. I started my quilting journey by taking a FREE, 6 session quilting class called Stitchin' Mission. The instructor taught us the basics of quilting in exchange for donating our first quilt (baby size)to charity. Great deal. svonfumetti at yahoo dot com

  16. I'd been sewing since age 11, but had never considered quilting until I saw my town's evening education brochure about 6 years ago. There was a free class offered teaching quilting for the Quilts for Kids organization, using donated fabric. I joined, fell in love with quilting and my quilting community, and have made countless quilts, donated to sick children, and gifted to family and friends.

  32. Love the idea of a design using hexagons to make a "picture", have been doing hexies since last May and teaching hexies to others now. NQD, shopped on line, and working on ongoing projects, usually have 2-3 active projects going all the time. A elderly friend kept pestering me to join the local quilt guild, but I enjoyed the magazines even before that, and that has been many years ago. Keep up the good work, Kathy

  35. How exciting to have a quilt on the cover. I worked on a quilt for my daughter, she even helped with it. My Grandmother got me started sewing, I used to sit in the sewing room with her all the time. It was just a natural jump to quilting.

  36. I taught myself to sew clothing in the mid 60's and I remember seeing one of the few quilting magazines that was around then,Quilter's Newsletter, and thinking that it might be fun to make a quilt. This was back before rotary cutters and rulers in the ancient time of cut out cardboard templates and scissors. I made a sampler quilt that I still have and I am still quilting away but it's so much easier now.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My mother and grandmother are quilters and they are the ones who got me started quilting.
I didn't do anything exciting for national quilting day, not even sure if I got to quilt.

  53. I loved reading about you and your triplet daughters. I hope my kids love sewing the way I do some day. I spent the actual "Quilting Day" buying, cleaning, and moving a brand new bedroom set that we did NOT intend to buy, but the price was way too good to pass up. But pretty much every other day this month had some sewing in it! My mom first taught me how to use a sewing machine as a kid, but I didn't really get into it until I decided I wanted to make a jeans quilt 5 years ago and discovered the world of quilt blogs. I don't think I'll ever be able to stop now!

    ReplyDelete
  54. That's amazing! My grandmother was my inspiration, but I never had the guts to go for it until I found all the wonderful quilting blogs and tutorials on the web. Yours included. ;) Thanks for the chance..

  57. I feel as if I have always sewed but I didn't quilt until my second son was born. I am self-taught and didn't quilt seriously until I moved to the city I live in now and found that in spite of having little kids, it was a very unfriendly place. In desperation I started working part-time at a quilt shop and the rest is history. No one I knew when I was growing up quilted unfortunately, or I probably would have started quilting much earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  58. What a sheep! I've been quilting so long, I don't remember what made me start. My mom taught me to embroider at the age of 5, and I've been doing something with a needle and 'thread' since then. National Quilting Day--I don't remember.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Congratulations on being a cover girl! Your sheep is delightful. I started quilting on my own as a teenager to use up scraps from my home ec sewing class. I was just being thrifty. ReplyDelete

  62. A few years a parent donated fabric to my Spanish club when I opened the bag there were hundreds of little squares. I called the parent and told her that we could not use the squares because we were in need of yardage since we were making ponchos.i asked her what the little squares of fabric were for and she said she made quilts. I was fascinated and a week later she gave me private lessons on how to use those squares. Eight years later I am still quilting thanks to her.

  63. My grandma on my dad's side inspired me to quilt.

  65. Who doesn't love (if they are honest) to jump on a bed? This sheep quilt is way past cute. You asked who got me started on quilting and it was probably my great-grandmother in Blackfoot, Idaho. She always had a quilt going when I was growing up.

  68. I guess my Mother started me quilting even if she did not know it. Last March, my Mother passed away. I had been staying with her until bedtime everyday. I needed something to keep busy. I saw a quilt pattern and said, "I can do that." I made a Christmas Tree quilt.

  73. I first started quilting in the late 70's along with just about everyone else after the centennial as a mother with a young child. After a couple of years life intervened as well as a full time job and other interests. It would be more than 30 years later that I started quilting again--and haven't stopped yet! This would be my first hexie quilt as I am a machine piecer.

  75. My mom started me on a quilting journey! I celebrated National Quilting Day with some hand sewing.

    ReplyDelete
  76. When I was 18 years old, my great Aunt Mildred helped me make my first quilt. We bought the fabric at GC Murphy's on the flat fold table. We cut templates from cardboard then cut all the pieces out with scissors. We sewed it on the machine and I hand quilted it on Aunt Mildred's quilt frame. Aunt Mildred passed many years ago. She would be amazed with all of the tools and tricks that we have today.

    Love your hexies :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I pieced my first block when I was 10 or 11 years old under the sharp eye and tutalidge of my great-grandmother. She was a life long quilter and taught me not only to piece, but to embroider and crochet as well. I didn't begin quilting again until about 5 years ago, but since then I have become truly infected with the quilting bug.

    ReplyDelete
  79. About 20 years ago, I read in a local newspaper that a school nearby was going to have evening quilting classes, so I decided to give it a try and the rest is history. Prior to that I sewed clothing for myself. My mom taught me how to sew because I was getting too picky with the clothes she was making me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. My mother got me started sewing when I was little, but I took a break for several years. When I got back to sewing, I got interested in quilting and taught myself.

    ReplyDelete
  82. It took a lifetime to get the bug for quilting for me. About 14 years ago the bug bit after a big life change and I've been going strong ever since. I watched the first program of Alex Anderson's show and went out and bought the "necessities". The rest is history. P.S. I just love your little quilt and have a new grandson on the way, lucky me! He will be getting one just like it!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I enjoyed reading your quilting journey. Your sheep is so very cute. Reading blogs like yours for the past few years is what keeps me inspired to keep on quilting.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I adore that sheepie, Deon! We called them sheepies in our family! I loved watching my maternal grandmother sewing when I was a little girl and her beautiful quilts often took Blue Ribbons and Sweepstakes awards for her entries in the State Fair. When I was 5 year old, I was convinced I could make a quilt for my dolly, so I rounded up my daddy's monogrammed hankerchiefs, cut up most all of them, and tried to sew by hand what my grandmother made look so easy. :) I polished my skills a bit better when expecting my first baby, making 5 or 6 quilts that didn't involve fabrics garnished from my father's closet! And isn't everyday Quilting Day? ;)

  89. I love the hexie-sheep. I already see a few in my grandmother's flowergarden to-be (yes, still have to start that one LOL).
I would love to know more about the origamie hexagons too, soI better strat searching!
My start of quilting was a small quilt show in the nursing home where my mother was at the time.

Mum taught me all things machine sewn and Grandma looked after all things hand sewn. Thanks for offering a giveaway and congratulations on having your pattern published in Quiltmaker. Way to go, Cover Girl.

  115. I completed my first quilt on National Quilters Day about 15 years ago. Completely self-taught. Although I have been fortunate enough to receive some LOVELY works from my grandmother, I didn't know about them till after she was gone. Would love to go back in time to get the 4-1-1. Recently came into possession of two incredible quilt tops of which I am absolutely clueless as to their pedigrees. If I had known of their existence, I might have been able to ask my mother but I lost her not long ago as well. Sorry to tell you my life story. ;c) My point is, I guess, ALWAYS DOCUMENT!!

  117. My big brother actually got me into quilting and sewing and the ladies from Threadbias really support and encourage me on my journey. I feel that it relaxes me and I love all the beautiful fabrics. Thanks for a chance to win a great prize...just love that little sheep!

  118. I spent Natl Quilting day teaching a beginning quilting class at my church. Thats celebrating in my book. My great grandmother made quilts. I have the one she gave my parents when they got married. I didn't start quilting until decades after she was gone.

  119. I did celebrate NQD by finishing a "little qiult" from quilt blocks I found in a bag of rags. I love it so much. Crooked and unmatched seams all left alone as I feel sure some little girl was making this and gave up on it and now it will live with me.

  120. What a cute little lamb on the magazine cover! I spent NQD packing and moving, and not quilting, unfortunately. Would love to win the giveaway. sarah@forrussia.org

  121. I have always loved quilts and for many years wanted to make one but with working and raising children I never seemed to have enough time. Now that I no longer work I have finally found the time to quilt and I love it and in some ways am glad that I waited to learn since there are so many new techniques and tools that have changed the world of quilting since the 1970's.

  122. I was at my first Time Out for Women in Spokane on National Quilting Day this year. My quilting Journey started with a Rail Fence flannel quilt. I got the pattern from a friend and bought my flannel at JC Penney. Those were the days of the machine that counted the yards and snipped the edge and the fabric was torn. I remember using a cereal box for the templates and cutting it out with scissors. Thanks to modern tools and techniques I have made many more quilts since then. Hope to win the half hexie and fabrics so I can maeke the Lamb Quilt for my next grandchild.

  123. Your lamb quilt is so adorable Deonn!! I am the first quilter in my family. I was first interested in quilting many years ago but never really could get into it. About 2 years ago I saw a YouTube video from Missouri Star Quilt and have been hooked ever since. Jenny made it look so easy. Thank you for sharing!

  125. How exciting! I think that lamb is so cute, it would make an excellent Easter flag. :) I celebrated Nat'l Quilting Day by finishing my oldest UFO (only a year and a half old) which is a quilted pillow case. And my start story is that one day I was STRUCK by the idea that we could use a new comforter on our king size bed and wait, I could just make one! So I went to my Grandma Linda and she suggested I take a beginning class, I did, and was in, hook, line, and sinker! Then my great-aunt sent me a sewing machine, and I inherited my grandma's Bernina, and I love being a part of this world where everyone loves doing what I do as much as me. Thank you for the opportunity to add some more fun things to my corner of the world!

  126. I fell in love with Amish quilts in the 70s and made a few trips to PA to visit Amish areas and came home with a variety of quilts. But it wasn't til I retired in 1999 that I got time to do much quilting. Now I am a longarm quilter for others and love applique.

  127. Any give-away is fine with me. I do traditional piecing of quilts for Quilts of Valor for our Veterans. I like the look of paper piecing and applique, but too time consuming for making multiple quilts. I ONLY made 83 QOV's last year and 17 other quilts including several king sized, so I just don't have enough time in my day. My bucket list does however have a Mariners Compass on it.

  128. I love the little lamb, I can't wait to try my hand at making one - I think I will keep it for me. Something I do not do very often. It reminded me of the little bummer lambs we raised as children. Lots of fond memories. Thanks for the chance to win the fun ruler and fabric.

  132. Oh gosh on National Quilting Day I cleaned some of my sewing room although there is much left to do. :( But then I went online and bought a bunch of quilty things from some tools to fabrics and some new online classes.

I have no one in my family that ever did any quilting other than my Grandmother. She did hers by hand although I never knew she did until she was gone. A small box was found with my name on it when my Mother was helping go through Grandma's things. What I found inside was a very small pink quilt she had made by hand for my first child, a daughter who was stillborn in my 5th month. She finished it and packed it away after putting a little note in there to me. She had hoped I would have another girl so she could give it to me then if she was still around. Well, I had three boys (one set of twins) after my little girl although she was gone before I had any of them. So my quilting has been learned on my own mostly by blogs and other resources online. There was no local quilt shop available to anyone who is disabled to take their classes. It made me upset to learn this as I thought there were laws that stores were to all be accessible to those who are handicapped. So, I turned to online and have been moving along that way. I'm still amazed at all the wonderful people online who are so nice and want others to learn.

  134. So very cute! Congrats!
I think I got to snatch a few minutes in the evening on National Quilt Day to get organized. I have a newborn, so mostly I just entered a bunch of giveaways from my phone while I was nursing all day. (I didn't win anything from that day, but it was fun.)
I love Riley Blake fabrics! My favorites are So Sophie and Pieces of Hope (my son has autism).

  135. I remember watching my mother and her mother hand piece and hand quilt many, many quilts. At the time I wasn't "big" enough to join in the quilting bee. Mother taught me to sew years later but I didn't start quilting until several years after the death of my mother. I do own quiet a few of the quilts Mother made and they are so inspiring and to me they are rare treasures!

  138. Congratulations! My mom taught me how to sew as a young girl. Each month we would go to the fabric store and she would purchase material for me to sew a garment or two. Went on to do tailoring (made my honeymoon suit!) and after having two kids who are now awesome young adults attending college, it's time for me to pursue quilting. And how life comes full circle, my mom and I spend time together sewing again. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  139. I was given a quilt by a friend of my great grandmother's when I was about ten years old and got a "real" bed. I still have it. I think that was my inspiration to learn.

  154. I know I'm too late for contests but just want to say how delightful the Sheep Shape pattern is, I grabbed the last copy of Quilt Maker off the shelf yesterday and would start on the sheep tomorrow if I didn't already have 2 half made projects on the table . I was interested in the placement guide (pg 28) and thought how cute it would be if the bottom was quilted with the zig-zag edge. I also have 2 quilt projects from my grandmother to complete. Unfortunately I did not learn she was a quilter until 30 years after she passed away. I is a Dresden plate that is missing one plate and needs repairs and the other 12 blocks of flower pots that I want to make into another QM Fall '12 inspired by Mexican Sunflowers.
