Ruching around... (& Giveaway)

In a Ruche... Having a Ruche time....   (pronounced "roosh")   Hey, what's a Ruche??

Click on the button below to find out all about Ruching!  It's my latest tutorial of this fun vintage technique made modern for RBD's Cutting Corners.

And now, it's time to clean up the Sewing Room, yeah!  It's been in a state since April: stuff made, kits cut, classes taught... There's hardly been time to clear a path to the sewing machine!  But all that is about to change, becuase...
I Quilt for CLEANING!!
My sweet little friend Frannie is here to trade a little labor for my quilting on her latest quilt... and she isn't taking any prisoners... look out, stash!!

Does anyone else find this picture funny/punny??

An old garbage bin from my Dad's farm...  I giggle every time I look at the label - "Raw Material"
Yep, we're making progress, and it's a cause to celebrate!!

So, while I'm at it, how about a little giveaway? Today's class samples, plus a nice little pile of other  printed ribbons, notions, buttons, an odd pattern of mine and whatnot.  The pile may grow by the end of the week!  ...another man's treasure and all that!

Ruched flowers,  ribbon and other odds & ends

Let me know in a comment what old-timey sewing or quilting or other home-arts technique you like to do, or want to learn.   Winner will be selected on Friday, July 11th after 6:00 pm MST.

Thanks for playing along!

  3. You've been having Fun since the Quilt Show. I had a Friend who was my Quilting Mentor at Hancock Fabrics who liked to do Ruching flowers. Lucky friend who is going to help you. I would love to be a fly on your wall and watch all the cutting and kitting up. I ordered the half Hexie so I can make the Lamb Quilt and more of the Hexigami you taught us.

  7. I'm totally consumed with making quilts -- that's old-timey right? Although I do use modern techniques. I'd kind of like to learn to make braided rugs to use up some fabric strips. Your class samples and goodies are lovely!

  13. this ruching looks very interesting, will check it out. About to try my hand at Lucy Boston EPP, have managed to buy the template so no excuse now. I think most of use suffer from untidy stitching areas, I stitch in the kitchen but the spare bedrooms (2) where I keep all my bits and pieces sometimes looks as though bombs has hit them!

  14. OMG, what I would do to crawl into that luscious can of scraps! You really need to get rid of some of them before it starts overflowing. ;) I like to do hand embroidery.

  16. Love your bin! I also love that you quilt for cleaning. :)That's awesome! I'd like to learn embroidery. I've done a little, but I'm not really sure how. The one other thing I've done is make moccasins. Mostly baby, but I have made on grown up pair (for my husband) and my Mom's going to help me make another couple this summer.

  17. I love the look of yo-yos on old timey quilts, but I have never made any myself. I love your tutorials, Deonn. I refer to your binding instructions EVERY time I add binding to a quilt. I am a very visual learner. Thanks for the chance to win some fun scraps.

  19. I have ruched before when I was learning fabric manipulation and living in TN where the guilds were great for learning 'new' things. The technique makes great flowers. And with the return to the 20's it's back in style, I think.

  21. I used to do quiet a bit of this on my daughters little outfits I made her when she was younger. I also used to do a lot of smocking. Now days although I have a embroidery machine I find myself doing a bit of hand embroidery. I just like the satisfaction it gives me and the flexability of doing a little or a lot in one sitting. That little celebrate bunting flag is adorable

  23. I love sewing anything by hand. Right now I'm making doll clothes for my granddaughter's birthday. Have you ever tried to sew them with a machine? Ugh, much easier by hand. My grandmother also tatted and I would love to learn. Thanks for the giveaway.

And I would like to learn how to make those scenes on kitchen towels, I think it's just an embroidery stitch but it's something I have yet to learn. Thank you for the Happy post below, I got a good giggle from it!
