Triangle-Squares... Squared

How to make
Multiple HALF- and QUARTER-SQUARE TRIANGLES
(all at once!)

Use two squares, one light, one dark.  (See Math Formulas below)
1) DRAW diagonal lines in an X from corner to corner on wrong side of light square.

2) LAYER squares, right sides together and STITCH 1/4” from drawn lines,
on both sides of each line.  PRESS flat.

3) CUT stitched square into fourths + and along drawn lines x as diagrammed:
PRESS each unit toward the darker fabric.
YIELD:  8 HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLES.

To turn HST units into QUARTER-SQUARE TRIANGLES
continue with these instructions:

4)  DRAW a diagonal line on the backs of four of the half-square triangle units.

5) LAYER squares atop the other half-square units, right sides together,
alternating prints.

6) STITCH a scant 1/4" from drawn line on both sides.  PRESS flat.

7)  CUT units open on drawn diagonal line, and PRESS.  REPEAT for all four sets.

8) TRIM each unit to desired size square.
YIELD:  8 Quarter-Square Triangles

MATH FORMULAS:

HALF-SQUARE = FS + .875
Finished Size + 1/2" for side seam allowances + 3/8" for the diagonal seam.
(aw, heck, I just round up to 1" for good measure! Then I can trim to size.)
Yield: 2 HST (Half-Square Triangle) units

HALF-SQUARE, SQUARED = (FS + 1") x 2
Finished Size + 1" for seams, then double that measurement
Yield: 8 HST units

QUARTER-SQUARES = FS + 1.25"
Finished Size + 1/2" for side seam allowances + 3/4" for two diagonal seams.
Yield: 2 QST units

QUARTER-SQUARES, SQUARED = (FS + 1.25") X 2
DOUBLE the previous measurements
Yield:  8 QST or Hourglass units
