I finished quilting a fun row quilt for a client today, and she came to pick it up in time to bind it, wrap it up, and give it to herself for Christmas. I like to lay out my customers' quilts when they come, just so they can see how it looks with the finished texture. When Margaret walked in and saw her quilt, she gasped, covered her mouth and began to cry. She said, "I didn't know it was so beautiful!" I cried with her for a moment or two and gave her a hug.
The process of making a quilt is an emotional event, and Margaret's quilt was no exception. Her finished quilt represented not only the investment of a year in her life, but the quilt itsself represented her love of the beautiful Heber Valley where we live. She had gone through such a process of choosing fabrics, making and re-making several of the blocks as she tried and learned new techniques, basically creating a relationship with the quilt in each and every stitch. When Margaret asked me to quilt it for her, she was entrusting her child to my care. Then the texture of the quilting gave it dimension and brought it to life. I love my job!
