Drunken Designing

Now, we're not talking about alcoholic beverages here, but this "Drunkard's Path" block has my head spinning!

At the recent USU Extension Sewing Training Conference, (thanks to my wonderful AccuQuilt Go! Cutter which we used to cut out 4,448 perfectly notched, perfectly curved pieces)  4-H Leaders and FACS Teachers from around the state of Utah  were able to experience the JOY of curved piecing!
(FACS=Family and Consumer Science - formerly known as "Home Ec")

And that was just half of the fun!    Look at the design possibilities we came up with using two prints and only 16 blocks!

Imagine if you had more blocks, more colors...

This could be come an addiction requiring intervention...

OK, and there may be a little bit of a side affect:

residue from 139 kits... *Ü*!
We'll use this to stuff handmade toys

Popular around the turn of the century, this configuration of blocks has been known by many NAMES:  Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, Solomon's Puzzle, Crooked Road, Cactus...  Those are just a smidgen of the 40+ documented names associated with this quilt!  Check out this link:  Quilt History Tidbits

And here's what happens when you use prints with similar color/value:
"Salsa" (OK, so I really call it "Drunken Salsa")

So, how do you feel about curved piecing?
Have you tried a die cutter for fabric?
Have you ever made a Drunkard's Path Quilt?
Want to try?

Here's how you can enter to win a KIT
to make your own Drunkard's Path Table Topper:
►  Be/become a Follower or Subscriber of Quiltscapes. (one entry)
►  Which of the 16 design options above is your favorite? (one entry)
Winner will be announced on Saturday, February 10th
Happy Quilting!

I absolutely love curved piecing!! And, I love the Drunkard's Path block. I made a variation once, with an additional piece, called Roads. My favorite is #6, but I have a whole book on variations written by Pepper Cory.
I already follow. I would love to win the kit!!
Thanks!

No I have never used a die would like to one day but in time....and not I have never really done any curved piecing. Other than the design for your D. Salsa I really like the lacy look of #16. Thanks for the chance to win a kit would love to win it....Happy day!

I have always loved this pattern. I did but out one, and pieced a few blocks. Then I gave it to my DIL when she was housebound to work on, but I don't think she's done much to it.
I love the plain ole Drunkard's path like the red/white one, however, that salsa combination has really caught my eye!

pinsandneedles said...

I really would like to try the original drunkard's path pattern but I also like the pattern created in #14. Thanks

I've never been that keen on the drunkard's path - maybe its because of the name ! but after seeing these blocks I'm going to have to change my ways - thanks for the giveaway - I also love your wanderer's path - I'm a subscriber to you blog :)

Hi again - I think #3 just outdoes #1 as my favourite :)

Hey there! I am already a follower & have been having fun reading your posts. Thanks for the chance to win a kit. I've never tried curved piecing because I've always been afraid of it. I've made princess seamed dresses, so I get the principle, but I've always worried about matching everything up!

kc said...

I like #11 best of all - I can just imagine the secondary pattern that would emerge from the corner pieces!!

Michele T said...

I have always loved the Drunkard's Path but have never tried making anything... those curved pieces are intimidating. Thanks for the chance to win a kit. ps I am a follower.

Michele T said...

I like the #3 and #6 - didn't realize how many variations there could be!! Wow!

Guess I'll choose #9. The longer I looked at the blocks the more unsure I became about what I liked the best. Nine looks like a flower and who could not like a flower...but the traditional drunkard's path is also neat.

LeAnne said...

I like #16 used as an on-point border. #5 and #6 are also at the top of my list. I bought the CurveMaster foot a long time ago but haven't used it much because I don't like cutting the templates. The DP die is on my wish list.

Wow. First, thank you for the great idea about using scraps (and WOW is that a pile of those up there.) for stuffing kids toys. WHY have I not thought of that before myself after seeing others mention using scraps to fill dog toys they make for donations to the shelters?? DUH. Thanks for waking me up. LOL

I just love the Rob Peter to Pay Paul quilts and the Drunkard's Path. I have both those dies on my wish list that I frequently remind my husband is available for his viewing. ha.

I really love your Drunken Salsa quilt. That's too cool.

I've never attempted either of those blocks but really need to someday soon. Can I just procrastinate until I finally get those dies? HA

I've done the Robbing Peter to Pay Paul and Rocky Road to Dublin variations of the Drunkard's Path in 6" blocks for my Sylvia's Bridal Sampler. I had to piece some of the units by hand to get the curves right. I'd love to try it with the Accuquilt Die. Thanks for the Give away
