Isn't it Fab-boo-lous? RBD Project Tour

Oh, my goodness, I can't get enough of this quilt that my friends made!

"A Fab-boo-lous Haunted Neighborhood" made by Kami Williams, quilted by Debbie Proctor
Can you believe it's time to start thinking about Halloween?

Adorable fabric, Halloween style: cute designs, glow-in-the-dark elements, whimsical motifs in sweet colors with a vintage feel.  "Fab-boo-lous" was designed by Dani Mogstad for Riley Blake Designs.

My friend Kami is in love with anything Halloweeny (she met her husband on Halloween), and I asked her if she wanted to play with this fabric and share her designing process for this project tour, and I could take more time playing with my granddaughter in Hawaii.  She said yes, and it turned into a design exercise for both Kami and her mom, Debbie, who helped to quilt it.

DESIGN.   The motifs in the fabric served as initial inspiration.  For starters, Kami loved the cute witch in the moon and the haunted house.  She soon located some great Halloween-themed paper-piecing patterns.

A cute haunted house, Dresden coffins, and a great little tree.

"Occupied Coffins" is available as a supplemental pattern with "A Ring of Coffins" by Jesse/Art School Dropout on Bluprint.  The Haunted House is a free pattern from an "Epic Halloween Sew-Along" hosted by Sylvia/Flying Parrot Quilts.  I'll list the links below.  A sweet autumn tree became the perfect creepy tree.

RBD Basic Shade fabric in granite made an ideal twilight background, and a checkerboard border plus fussy-cut elements finished off the designing process.

QUILTING.  Debbie got busy collecting Halloween quilting motifs -  adjusting, resizing, designing, learning more about her machine and having fun on this quilt.  First, the Skeletons, which, of course, needed to live in the coffins.

Witches, bats, ghosts, cats...  I'ts like playing "I-Spy"!

It's a little faint in the picture above, but some of the elements were quilted with glow-in-the-dark thread!

If you look closely, you can even see the little glowy moons and stars in the Star Scatter fabric used in the roof.

After the quilting was done, some of the elements were filled in with a black Micron pigma pen (doesn't bleed, archival safe).  Bats, cats...

Spiders... then more glow-in-the-dark quilting for the spiderwebs, pumpkins and R.I.P.

under the black light

Debbie reports that it was so cool to shut off the light in her dark sewing room and see creepy little faces looking back at her.  So she quilted more:  a little owl on the roof, eyes on the bats.

...and on the checkerboard border, a row of little Halloween houses.

It's a different quilt at night than you see in daylight!

A little faux-piped binding for a quick machine finish.

Then Kami and Debbie took a little ride up a nearby canyon for their photo shoot.

So many fun details!  Kami plans to enter this quilt in the Utah Quilt Festival quilt show, whose theme this year is "Sew Bewitching"!

Big THANKS to Kami and Debbie for taking over this blog post with such a fun project!  You can find the fabric at your local quilt shoppe or order it online.  Happy Haunting!
