RBD Sew Kewpie Project Tour

Mommy & Me Aprons and a Soft Book featuring Sew Kewpie® fabric

I remember having a Kewpie Doll when I was a child, so this fabric really spoke to me.

The prints with the cute little mischief-makers and baking motifs inspired me to make matching aprons for my daughter and her cute little mischief-making 2-year-old.  Mary Mulari's fun "Family Girls" reversible apron turned out to be the perfect pattern for this project!

I used some cute ric-rac and accent fabric from my stash for contrast on the large apron, and some RBD Swiss Dot on the little one.

This line also came with a panel for a soft book!  So cute!

It goes together quickly, just by sewing three sets of pages together and binding them in the middle.
TIP:  To keep the pages nice and smooth, I ironed Pellon 987F fusible fleece to the outside cover, then applied Pellon 981FF featherweight fusible interfacing to each of the other pages.  The pages remain soft and flexible.

I machine-bound the cover like a tiny quilt, then edge-stitched all the pages.

For that matter, the aprons were also edge-stitched all around too.  I think it adds a nice, finished look and closes any opening.
TIP:  Using a specialty foot also helps get that perfectly-spaced, even line of stitches.  Just move the needle over to one side or the other, and rest the center guide along the edge.

To stitch the pages together, I turned to a technique my daughter had taught to hand-bind a paper booklet using a simple Japanese Stab-Binding technique.  I figured the stitches were basically the same for fabric as for paper, and a large needle would work to punch the holes.  I watched her VIDEO TUTORIAL and tried the Chain-Stitch method.

I used some of Lori Holt's Aurifloss in a color to match the center page.

Marked 1/2" increments with a removable marker.

So far, so good!

Yep, I think these will make a nice Mother's Day gift for my girls!

This adorable fabric is making its way to quilt shops now!  Find it at an online retailer or ask for it at your local quilt shop!

Happy Sewing!  (And Baking!)

  2. These are darling! Would you share what you used inside the book pages. They lay so nice and flat. I have a panel to make into a book but have always been dissatisfied with my results. Thanks!!

    1. Thanks for the question, Missy! I used fusible fleece interfacing for the cover, and a Featherweight interfacing on all the other pages. I've updated the post.

    2. Thanks so much! I used batting for all the pages which made the book too bulky! I love the idea of binding the cover. Now I have to figure out what I did with the panel! :o)
