Reverberations Quilt

OR, "When Things Don't Go As Planned"...

My local quilt guild issues an annual design challenge.  The 2024 Challenge:  Make a two-color quilt.  I chose a couple of my favorite colors, then started designing in my EQ8 software.

How the design started:

How it evolved:   1)

                            2)

                            3)

How it de-volved:  (limited by yardage and time!)

Wow, I love that the combo of half-square triangles and half-rectangle triangles play with each other to give the illusion of curves!  (Click the link to see a fun HST tutorial >> Magic 8 HSTs)

How the quilt started:

The fabrics I ordered online turned out to be reverse in value than what I expected from the photos on my computer!  The value of the blue is a much lighter tone, and the teal is a darker shade!  I went ahead with the design, that is, until I got to the outer two rows...

Aaaaand...  How it turned out:

Poppies & Plumes Navy Damask by Lila Tueller for Riley Blake Designs
and Kaffe Fassett Emerald Shot Cotton

The more rows I added, the more my eyeballs wanted to reverse the focus and switch to seeing the blue as the main design instead of the teal.  Then I made a mistake and sewed the last two strips on upside down.  And guess what?  I decided to leave it!  I call it "Reverberations" - it's a good eyeball exercise. 😏

Yeah, it didn't turn out like I envisioned.  I didn't even turn it in for the challenge.

I quilted it with yummy and lush Minky plush fur on the back, and bound it with faux-piped binding for a baby quilt.  My little grandsons snuggle up in it and do not care one bit about the color or the design.

Some day, I'll recreate this design, and maybe use one of the first design evolutions.  Which version is your favorite?  What are your favorite two-color combos?

Happy Sewing!

  • ot a minute? Let's brew up some Half-Square Triangles with the help of this cool insulated tumbler from @missouriquiltco.

Sometimes called the "Magic 8", we take two larger squares and magically transform them into eight smaller half-square triangles with a couple of quick seams.

    Magic Formula: (FS + 1") x 2
    Desired finished size
    plus one inch
    multiplied by 2.
    1. Cut 2 squares ↑ using the formula (includes a little "fudge factor" so it can be trimmed perfectly).
    2. Layer squares right sides together and mark diagonally twice in an X.
    3. Stitch on both sides of the drawn lines. OR, if you used a seam marker, stitch right on those lines as I did in the reel.
    4. Cut into quarters (+), then cut between the stitched lines (x).
    5. Trim to size. I love using my #trianglesquareupruler to get perfect corner points! 😍
    6. Press.
Yield: 8 Half-square triangles, just like magic!

Next up: I'll tackle Half-rectangle triangles! My current quilt design is evolving much differently than I pictured it in my head... Sta
