Anywho...

Are you, or do you live with any Dr. Who fans???

I hadn't seen more than one or two odd episodes of this quirky BBC series, until my daughter started watching a Dr. Who marathon on Netflix.  Who is the Doctor?  He's a Time Lord who explores the universe in his time machine that he calls a T.A.R.D.I.S. (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space)  It looks like an old British police box, which is apparently "...bigger on the inside."

And then, the same daughter started to hang out with this guy... another Dr. Who avid fan. One thing led to another...

My daughter and I designed and made this TARDIS quilt. My daughter sewed it together, embroidered and applique'd.  We used V&Co's navy ombre' fabric from her Simply Style line and mitered corners on the blocks to create the dimensional effect of the door, then I quilted a wood-grain motif into the door panels.  We used plush fur (minky cuddle fabric) for the backing, so it's "warmer on the inside". I would have quilted down the side panels a bit more, but she wanted the loft to come through for a softer feel.

My daughter gave it to her guy when he came back from his summer internship in Japan.  His reaction:  "I'm totally geeking out!"  In other words, he loves it!

And, apparently, he loves her, too.

  2. Congratulations! Both on you finding Dr Who (big HUGE fan) and on your daughters engagement. I do have some questions about this, though.... Is he a timelord too? Now that he has his own Tardis and all, he must be a bit.... I do wonder.... is that quilt bigger on the inside too?

    2. Also, the quilt is "warmer" on the inside...especially with a minky backing!

  12. Love your TARDIS quilt. I have not yet gotten into Dr. Who. My mom is a huge Star Trek fan and I make a lot of Trek stuff. I would love to make a Dr. Who something, though. Great job.

  22. One of the best TARDIS quilts I've seen. My son, a big Dr Who Fan (but not a big quilt fan) just asked me if I'd make him a TARDIS quilt. My current designs are coming out at about 66x118. Seems too long. Would really appreciate advise on your piecing sizes. Much congrats to a great design and the engagement!
    Thanks, Robin

    1. I've been designing a TARDIS quilt too and it does sound like yours will be too tall...though hard to say without seeing it! Here's the link to my design so far (I've been making changes along the way and will post them soon): http://www.quiltsofafeather.com/2014/01/designing-new-tardis-quilt.html

  23. Just wanted to say I love what you did here! The fabric choice is one of my favorites of all the TARDIS quilts I've seen--and the woodgrain quilting is great!

  24. Are any of your quilts available for purchase? I can't sew worth a crap, but my son is obsessed with Dr. who and would LOVE this quilt!!

  25. Fabulous! (BTW, Doctor Who is the name of the show, not the name of the Doctor.)

  26. What a wonderful quilt! I want to do one like it, but how did you get the center wood panels to fade darker on the left? I love the dimension that it gives.
