Boogie Wonderland!! Blog Hop & Giveaway...

My turn today on the Black Tie Boogie Hop, the brainchild of the marvelous Madame Samm, organized by our Cheerful Cheerleader, Vicki, and Sponsored by Red Rooster fabrics (giving away bundles of their new line, Black Tie Boogie) among other prizes.

Now, you may know I have a thing for chickens - my very first guest tutorial ever was over at SewWeQuilt all about HENS and Chicks, and Hen Parties...but you may not know that back in the day I used to boogie down every weekend at the local disco... like this chick, haha!

My sisters and I would turn the stereo on and the lights off in the living room and practice dancing at nights.

Now I think it's funny when my girls tell me, "TURN IT DOWN, MOM!!"  And they may or may not be slightly mortified to watch me dancing in the quilt studio... but hey.  Groovin' to the beat helps get the project done!  Now let's BOOGIE!  (It's more effective if you hit the play button above ↑)

Bon Apetit! Tablerunner... ready for the holidays.

Can you tell I have a Chicken Kitchen?? this mug.
And these Italian chicken pitchers...

I also finished quilting this Hoo-Ville Chick wallhanging:
Hoo-Ville Chick is a bonus block with the Hen Party Chicks PATTERN

Now, for more listening pleasure, here are a few Boogie tunes from yesteryear.
It's a great way to erase 35 years...

Boogie Oogie Oogie.  A cool Saxophone version:

Earth Wind & Fire... that was the first 8-Track I ever bought.
I've been movin' to the groovin' to this YouTube Playlist all day long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvBMyevOikg&feature=share&list=PLD1C00E1E50702934

Gotta at least play the first tune on my list, Let's Groove (#12/103)...  Boogie down.  Yeah, it's groovy.

So's this cute panel... would you like it?

Do you see quilt blocks on the stage in the second song (#13/103) on my Earth/Wind/Fire playlist (bottom video)?? What are the blocks?  I love this band, but after I saw their stage... I love them more. Remember #17 and Sing a Song #18 are among my favorites.  You can really see the stage in #18.  Hit the forward button >| if you don't want to listen to all the tunes on the playlist. Did you have a favorite group or dance tune?  Leave a comment and I'll choose a winner next Monday morning, 11/25.

Join these other chicks for our hop today...

Pin It! Hop ~ Too Many Pincushions?

Can a girl ever have too many pincushions??  My answer is NO. Especially when I find myself asking... "Where are the pins!?!"

Here is my latest - a new "Lil' Woolie"

* Felted wool ball
* Bits of wool or roving
* A little glue
* A 1-1/2" button
* A few pins.
and that's it!

More kits and patterns available HERE.

These cute little critters can be made with pre-felted wool balls that come in a package...

...Or by felting your own wool, like the cute little Ladibug above!

To "Felt" your own wool ball:  Roll some yarn or roving (cleaned, carded wool, ready to be spun into yarn but still fluffy) into a tight little ball.  Use a felting needle with a hooked end to "felt" or bind the roving into a tight little ball.  Any color will do.    Note:  Do NOT get your fingers or your lap in the way of the felting needle.  (Don't ask how I know this...)  You can use a foam pad or brush to do the felting on, if you want.

When you get a good, tight ball for the center, add your desired color of roving, felting as before.

It takes awhile to poke all of the fibers together with one little needle, but that's all I had.  Clover makes a felting tool with many needles together.  More effective, I'm sure.  Eventually, the ball becomes tight and smooth.

If you want to shrink the fibers and meld them together even more firmly and securely, slide your wool ball into an old nylon stocking, tie a knot on either side, then throw it into the wash.  The agitation and hot water in the washing machine will continue the felting process.  Dry in the dryer or allow to air dry, and you're ready to embellish.  Felt in pieces of yarn, other wool bits or small sections of roving to finish your masterpiece!

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever have enough pincushions!  Here's my little pile of pretty little pinnies.

Oh, you want to know my favorites?
CHICKENS, of course, thank you for asking! *Ü*

And you may have seen my Rosebud Wristlet pincushions... love these!  Here's the TUTORIAL.

Love these little ultra-suede hearts too - here's a link to that pattern from APQ:  HEARTS

And of course there are other creations, too, some I made, some were made by quilting friends.  Here's an adorable little hexie cushion I received from an online pincushion swap.  Sew cute!

Love my little owls.  Tutowlrial from Moonstitches HERE.

So... my dear husband thinks I have too many pincushions, and that I should give some away.  Do you think so too?  What would you prefer?  A Hen Party Chick?  A Rosebud Wristlet?  A little Owlet?  A Lil' Woolie?  A surprise?  I'll give away a few of these on Saturday after the hop.  Or maybe I'll just make some more.  *Ü*

At any rate, please leave a little note here if you'd like to participate.  Be/become a follower and let me know for a 2nd chance.  And be sure to visit the rest of my pinny sisters today!

Big THANKS to Kristin of Meadowbrook, a terrific cheerleader for this hop who has inspired us with terrific, adorable pincushions each day of the hop! And of course, the illustrious Madame Samm who has gathered some terrific sponsors and prizes for this hop.  See all the details at SewWeQuilt.com.  (By the way, I can't wait for you to see her pinnies!!)

Hexie Queen Blog Hop!

Here it is, the last day of the Hexie Hop, and once again, I am truly amazed and dazzled at the creativity of our hoppers!  The star of the show, though, is the hexagon herself!

Big THANKS to our Cheerleader Debby and our Blog Hop Queen, Madame Samm for organizing this hop!

If you've stopped by my blog before, you may have noticed I have a thing for hexies!  It started with an assignment at the beginning of Summer to come up with quick projects using Lori Holt's Half-Hexie rulers for a new video tutorial with Cindy at Riley Blake Designs.
LINKS to these TUTORIALS may be found HERE or HERE.  VIDEO HERE.
Then I began seeing that versatile little six-sided beauty everywhere - logos, architecture, even bathroom floors, not to mention being featured in magazines, new patterns, new rulers; new twists on an old favorite, which was popular in the late 1700s / early 1800s (wow!)  Here's an example circa 1830, courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum.

This technique became popular again after 1925, with the Grandmother's Flower Garden layout using feed sack prints.  Here's my sample, using reproduction Depression era prints, applique'ed to a background for a "someday" sampler.

And that brings me to my project for today.  Definitely NOT your Grandmother's Flower Garden.

 Table Topper made with large hexies, using this TUTORIAL or this VIDEO
(Did you see? Scrapbook Chickadoodle used my tutorial for her Hexie Hop, too! Cool!)

Blanket-stitched finish.

 Add a couple of Hot Pads...

Throw on some pretties.

We've really been enjoying this topper.  Now I'm dreaming of a full size quilt using the same technique... Here are the topper fabric requirements, just in case you'd like to make one for yourself.

HEXAGAMI Tutorial
   NOT Your Grandmother's Flower Garden
  2/3 yard main print (floral)
  1 fat quarter print for flower center/hot pads
  3/8 yard each of three solid/shade/tone-on-tone prints for backings.
  5/8 yard cotton batting, or use 10" scraps of batting for each section/hot pad
  1/3 yard insulated batting for hot pads (optional)

  Two 1" buttons

By the way, if you don't own a tool to cut hexagons, here's a great TUTORIAL for cutting equilateral hexagons with your ruler.  My hot pads finished at about 8-1/2" from side to side.

You'll enjoy these stops to wrap up the Hexie Queen Blog Hop!
