Snippets ~ A Snappy Case

Today's Snippet!
Ever lose your spectacles in the sewing room, or just can't see to find them?  Here's another fun Snippet from my sewing room to yours... an easy-to-make eyeglass case to hold those elusive specs!

Supplies:
Main fabric:  6-1/2" x 7" rectangle
(I used laminate - matches my sewing kit *Ü*)
Accent/Lining fabric:  6-1/2" x 8-3/4" rectangle
Heavy fusible interfacing (Pellon Decor-Bond)
Metal tape measure (1/2" wide) that you can chop up
Tin snips or heavy-duty craft scissors

FUSE interfacing to wrong side of lining fabric.

With right sides together, STITCH main fabric to lining along one 6-1/2" edge.
Use 1/4" seam allowances.  PRESS seam allowance toward main print
(use presscloth if making with laminate).

FOLD sewn unit right side out and align opposite edges together.
PIN or BASTE lower edges.
You should be able to see about 3/4" of accent fabric at one end.

STITCH in the ditch to form your casing for the tape measure.

Fold to find the center of the top band and STITCH down the middle of the casing.

CUT off two 3" lengths of metal tape measure with tin snips or craft scissors.
Round the edges if possible.
If the ends are rough, use a bit of painter's tape to wrap the ends.

With right side of eyeglass case up, INSERT tape measure into both ends of casing.
Be sure the DOMED side of the metal tape measure is UP.

With right sides together, PIN edges along side and bottom.
Make sure you have enough room to stitch a 1/4" seam
and enclose the tape measure.  If not, RE-TRIM tape measure if necessary.

STITCH seams, using 1/4" seam allowance.
Finish edges with zig-zag stitch if desired.

TRIM corners and TURN your eyeglass case right side out.
Use the help of a chopstick or other blunt object to turn the corners.

SQUEEZE to open the end and insert your glasses.

Stores one or more pairs of glasses.
Better yet, make one for each pair for every room of the house.
(Advice to self...)  I buy these cute reading glasses at Michael's
craft store for around $2.99, and yeah, I have a pair
in every room and I still lose them!

I've been having sew much fun making these little projects and doo-dads for my sewing room using just a few scraps and odds and ends, all while testing out Riley Blake Designs' fun fabrics and notions.

I call these my

  1. Hi Deonn
These spippets are fabulous ideas. I really do love the UFO to GO design wall the best I think (and the tip about using a metal tape measure to make the closure on the glasses case - clever).
    Thanks for offering the giveaway

  2. I've probably got around 12 UFO's!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have way too many UFOs to count. Started quilting (piecing) about 5 years ago & made lots of tops that are folded & waiting to be quilted. I'm finally starting to actually quilt them. Thanks for the giveaway.

  10. The eyeglass case is darling. I need to make one of those for my mom. Great idea.

  11. I have more UFOs than I can count. Ideally I would like to finish at least 6 of them once my machine is fixed. Baby steps...

  12. What's my favorite Snippet? The UFO-to-Go Design Wall is marvelous and it's my intention to make one. You can see that the giveaway would be perfect; thanks for the chance.

  15. I looked all over for my eyeglasses in the sewing room yesterday! This is perfect and especially if I make it in a bright color I won't overlook. :) blessings, marlene

  16. What a cute idea! I know of several people I could make these for.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I printed out this pattern hoping to make one for a Christmas gift. I am so snowed under all of my UFO's I think I have about 16 that are cut and started and another 7 or 8 that are kitted and piled on my table. If we have an earth quake, I could be Barrie's under all of them and never be found.

  18. Uh I have a few UFOs I am a bit ashamed of actually, thanks for the chance to win, love your tutorials!

  22. I am a one project at a time gal. But this usually includes one machine project and one hand sewing project. And I can't stand not finishing a project, so, I don't have any big UFOs!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't see the rafflecopter...?
But chevron laminate?!! what?! I had no idea it existed and I am in love!

    ReplyDelete
  24. i have at least 20 going on right now. maybe more.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've got one UFO, strictly counted there are 4 UFO, because I work on one project, have a leaders-and-enders for another project and a hexie handsewing going on, but these are worked at, so no UFOs as in my definition.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, geez, I have about 15 UFOs! I am easily distracted :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I started counting UFO's last week and I lost count. So I have no idea how many projects my daughter's will inherit

    ReplyDelete
  28. im going to make those cases, I've got 2 new pairs of glasses arriving soon

    ReplyDelete
  29. I am new to quilting. So my UFOs list probably less than 5

    ReplyDelete
  30. My comment disappeared - rafflecopter just isn't working on blogs for this hop
    I have about 6 ufos.
    I already follow your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Your snippets are great and all very useful.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Rafflecopter isn't cooperating for me either, but I follow you on GFC now and I have many UFO's, mostly things I started to make myself, but got distracted working on projects for other people instead. One of the funnier ones is a set of coasters with scientifically accurate leaves embroidered on them (I realized I couldn't identify oak vs. maple vs. ash vs. mulberry and thought that'd be a good way to learn!). I got one completely done, but only one, so I only have one fall coaster and have to use it mismatched with other coasters on the table, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  68. My favorite snippit is the needle case

    ReplyDelete
  69. I have two UFOs right now. OH no, wait, I have three. oops.
The Snippet I liked most is your UFO to go. I thought that I might try making that if I had the laminate and thought it might make a good changing pad for my Granddaughter too.

Also, the Rafflecopter works fine with the IE browser BUT, you need to have the most current one (IE9) so those having problems are probably still using an older version. That was one reason I finally upgraded to IE9 myself. So many had started using Rafflecopter so I had to break my resistance to change and upgrade.
