Snowed In ~ RBD Project Tour

"Let it Snow" lap quilt, 58" x 67"
featuring Snowed In fabric by Heather Peterson for Riley Blake Designs.
with Pin Dot Christmas by Lori Holt for RBD

New winter-themed fabrics are making their way to quilt shops now, including these cozy prints designed by Heather Peterson (Anka's Treasures).

I love the rich, saturated colors that Heather always uses in her lines of fabric, and this range is no exception.  Just look at this cute selvage edge!

I used her panel as the focal point of my quilt, then grew the quilt with borders, blocks, more panel pieces, and more borders.

Border strips helped me get the panel to the size I would need to add pieced blocks.  TIP:  Always add a little more than you need.  You can always trim it down.  My pieced blocks will be 9" finished, and should fit a 27" x 36" finished size panel.  So I added strips to bring the center panel to 27-3/4" x 36-3/4", giving me a little "fudge factor".

I made my favorite block, the Ohio Star, to border the panel, and I used my favorite "Magic 8" technique to make the HSTs needed.  Lately, it seems like I've been making endless HSTs

Chain-piecing to save time and thread...

56 3-1/2" (unfinished size) QSTs

14 Ohio Star block with fussy-cut centers.

Before I added my pieced borders, I had to be sure my math worked out.  There are always variables once the blocks are sewn together; seam allowance, thread thickness, pressing, etc.  That's why I waited to see what my pieced borders measured before trimming down the center.  Then it seemed to go together perfectly!

Well, almost!!  Oopsie!  You would think I might have noticed before sewing on the first border.

Easy enough to fix, though!  I just used my little "Zip-Rip" technique.

I love winter, if only for the Holiday season!  So, until then, I'll content myself with the remembrance of singing with an amazing choir for nine wonderful annual Christmas concerts.  And here's a video medley with Santino Fontana, including the lines, "Let it Snow" from one of my favorite concerts.

p.s. At 3:56, check out the brunette on the left (yours truly), singing, "In the lane, snow is glistenin'"!

  2. Such a wonderful opportunity, being able to sing in the Choir!!! It was one of my dreams, but it won't happen: my hubby gets headaches when we visit the Salt Lake area, so our retirement home is in Marysville Ca. :-) How long is the time you get to be a member of the Choir? Are you all able to practice and perform together yet? Hugs, H

    1. We hope to gather soon! With such a big group, we'll be the last to reconvene. I was supposed to retire in April of 2020, but if they still need me, I'll still sing!
